About AstroTours

AstroTours are 50-minute, guided journeys through the Universe in 3D.

Using innovative Virtual Reality technologies developed by the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing at Swinburne University, AstroTours are designed to educate and entertain audiences about astronomy in stereoscopic 3D.  Special lightweight glasses fitted with polaroid lenses provide the simulated 3-dimensional effect, and the movies, animations and simulations that make up the tour are all produced by SpaceWorks – a team of in-house astronomers, visualisation researchers, animators, artists and programmers.

Each AstroTour is hosted by a professional astronomer who adapts the content to the requirements and interests of the specific audience.

Our Tour

Spiral Galaxy

This AstroTour for AFAS members and guests was organised especially by our Vice-President, François Malherbe, and staff of the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing to cover some recent discoveries in the realm of space.  The tour was pitched at a level appropriate for members and their teenage children.

Some thirty people attended, including four children of members, all of whom found the experience both instructive and memorable.

Venue

The venue for the AstroTour was the Virtual Reality Theatre located on the ground floor of the Arts Building (Building AR) in Room AR104.
